The Chinese celebrate the arrival of a baby about one month after he or she is born. Traditionally parents host a Red Egg and Ginger party to officially announce the family's new arrival.
For this celebration, female friends and neighbors help the new mother dye hard-boiled eggs red to give as gifts to friends and relatives. The Chinese consider the color red to symbolize happiness and good luck; eggs symbolize the change of life from fetus to newborn. The red egg is supposed to be rubbed on the baby's forehead.
The ginger symbolizes the deep roots of a family, which have been made literal with the addition of this new grandchild. Gingerroot is a double blessing during this celebration because the Chinese believe that aromatic ginger will provide restorative healing to the new mother. For good luck, the ginger is pickled in red or pink brine.
These red eggs and ginger (pickled gingerroot) are placed at the center of the table where the feast is to take place and are also often given out as tokens to guests as they leave.
